Welcome to Batemans Bay

Batemans Bay is a charming coastal town with a village atmosphere that when you arrive, you feel welcomed.

Batemans Bay is on the Princes Highway and is the gateway to the Eurobodalla sitting at the mouth of the stunning Clyde River. Batemans Bay is located about three and a half hours south of Sydney (280 klm), two hours east of Canberra (151 klm) and nine hours north of Melbourne (760 klm).

Batemans Bay, like much of the east coast of Australia, was proclaimed by Captain James Cook, who on his travels of discovery, named the bay on 22nd April 1770 after Nathaniel Bateman. Nathaniel Bateman was Captain of Lord Colvill's ship HMS Northumberland at the time when Captain Cook was serving as ship master from 1760-62. It was not until the 1800’s that industry took off in Batemans Bay with the establishment of saw milling, oyster farming and nearby at Mogo, Gold Mining.

Although the town has grown and progressed over time, much of the natural beauty of the region remains as it was when Captain Cook first decided that this was a town worthy of his mention. The population was just over 260 in 1881 and now in less than 150 years, it is over 16000 and with the growth has come some great facilities and infrastructure.

You will know when you have arrived in Batemans Bay especially if your journey begins from the north or the west because that’s when you are greeted by our striking bridge. Built to replace the laborious vehicular ferry and commissioned on the 21st November, 1956 the bridge is still a fully operational icon. Erected from steel   with a vertical lift of some 95 feet, its overall length is reported to be 1008 feet long and 27 feet wide.
